Texas A&M student killed in freak accident

The Texas A&M Commerce campus flags are at half-staff today in honor of a student who was killed in a freak accident Tuesday evening

Javion Thomas, 19,  was helping a friend push a stalled car in Commerce Tuesday we it got away and ran over the student.  He died a short time later.

The death is being treated as an accident, according to Commerce Department of Public Safety Director Chris Bassham.

Relatives say the car belonged to a friend and had broken down.  A group of friends was pushing the car when they lost control, and Thomas was hit.  They say Thomas was not supposed to be pushing the car in the first place.

"He was the one who had major surgery on his spine." said Veronica Lynch-Davis, Thomas's aunt.  "He was always wanting to help and willing to help.  And at one time, because of his spine, he couldn't help pick up things anymore and he hated it when he moved in because we had to help him.  And that was not in his nature."

The school flags on campus were lowered to half staff in honor of Thomas, according to the school president's office.

"We lost our angel" said Lynch-Davis.
