Texans and visitors alike can cast a line without a fishing license on Saturday, June 6, as the state celebrates its annual Free Fishing Day on public waterways across Texas.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) designates the first Saturday in June each year as Free Fishing Day to encourage families, friends, and newcomers to get outdoors and try fishing. No fishing license or endorsements are needed to fish recreationally in any public waters, though all standard bag and size limits still apply.

This year’s event falls on June 6, 2026, giving anglers a full day to enjoy lakes, rivers, bays, and streams from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast and everywhere in between. Popular spots in North Texas include lakes like Lewisville, Ray Hubbard, and Grapevine, along with urban fishing piers and state park shorelines.

“Free Fishing Day is an annual event that encourages Texans to get outdoors, enjoy nature, and go fishing with family and friends,” TPWD officials have noted in past announcements.

The day aims to introduce more people to the sport while highlighting the importance of conservation efforts funded by regular fishing license sales.

In addition to free fishing, TPWD and local partners are hosting family-friendly events at various locations, including fishing clinics, education stations, and community gatherings at places like Kerrville-Schriener Park. Year-round free fishing is also available from the shores of more than 70 Texas state parks (park entry fees may apply).

Anglers should check local conditions, weather, and any site-specific rules before heading out. TPWD reminds everyone that 100% of fishing license fees support fisheries management, habitat preservation, and outreach programs that keep Texas waters productive.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler bringing along a beginner or a family looking for an affordable weekend activity, Free Fishing Day offers a perfect opportunity to connect with the outdoors.
