Texas faces ongoing risks of catastrophic failures despite improvements in its overall infrastructure, according to the latest report card from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The state's infrastructure grade rose from a D+ in 2021 to a C, reflecting modest improvements across several categories. The only "B" grades were given for advancements in aviation and bridge infrastructure.
Austin Messerli, an ASCE spokesperson, said the top recommendation for addressing the state's infrastructure challenges is increased spending.
"Six of the 16 categories had grades that went down from 2021," he said. "These include drinking water, energy, levies, solid waste, transit, and wastewater."
However, funding remains uncertain as federal dollars from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have been frozen. State and local funding will likely be needed to close the gap and avoid potential system failures.
