FRISCO (1080 KRLD)- A mountain lion has been confirmed to be in the area after sighting reports.
Frisco police say crews with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department checked out security camera footage after a reported sighting on Monday. They are confirming it is, in fact, a mountain lion that was spotted near Lake Lewsville.
TPWD is now monitoring the area and asking people to report any other sightings. They suspect the mountain lion was just passing through, and will not stay in the area for long.
Generally, mountain lions in the state are found in parts of South Texas and in the Trans-Pecos, but some can travel far away. Attacks on people are extremely rare.
Here are some tips from TPWD on what to do if you come across a mountain lion:
• Pick up all children off the ground immediately.
• Do NOT approach the lion
• Stay calm. Talk calmly and move slowly.
• Face the lion and remain in an upright position.
• Do not turn your back on the lion. Back away slowly.
• Do NOT run.
• Do all you can to enlarge your image. Do NOT crouch down or try to hide
• If the lion is aggressive, throw rocks, sticks, or anything you can get your hands on.
• If the lion attacks, fight back. Fighting back can drive off lions.
If anyone encounters a mountain lion, they are urged to report it to TPWD DFW Urban Wildlife Biologist, Rachel Richter, at Rachel.Richter@tpwd.texas.gov.
