Time running out to protest property values in several North Texas counties

Today is the last day to protest property values in Dallas County, Johnson County and Collin County.

"The thing that you need to focus on is the market value of the home, that's the value that you're able to protest and get reduced," says local realtor Chandler Crouch. "You need to submit your intent to protest, then they'll give you a hearing date at some point in the future."

Crouch says you'll have until your hearing date to assemble evidence for your case, things like comparable sales, photos of condition issues and even repair estimates. He says condition issues are one of your best bets for getting your property's market value down ... but a new law could help, too.

"They redefined some terminology. Now, the appraisal district has to have clear and convincing evidence that the value needs to be increased on a year after you've had a successful protest."

Basically, Crouch says successfully protesting your property value now makes it less likely to increase in the future.
