Train derailment in Waxahachie overturns 16 cars, disrupts roads and businesses

A Union Pacific freight train derailed late Monday night in Waxahachie, toppling 16 cars, including 14 tanker cars carrying ethanol. The accident occurred near Monroe Street and N. Elm Street around 11:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from emergency crews and local officials.

Authorities confirmed that no spills or injuries had been reported, but warned that cleanup efforts will be extensive, with road repairs expected to take several days. Initially, five intersections were completely blocked, though crews have since cleared some areas, leaving detours in place across downtown Waxahachie.

As a precaution, Waxahachie’s fire department remains on scene, closely monitoring the situation for any unexpected hazards.

Officials estimate that cleanup and recovery will last into Tuesday, with crews working to remove the damaged railcars and assess infrastructure stability. Residents and commuters are advised to avoid the affected area until further notice.
