Two Dallas doctors are up on federal charges in a pain management scam investigated by the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas.
Desi and Deno Barroga have been indicted on a string of charges that include one count each of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Investigators claim the Barrogas prescribed high doses of hydrocodone, oxycodone and morphine to patients who made short office visits once a month.
The two doctors are accused of submitting bogus claims to the patients' insurance companies. The feds claim the doctors pretended to give the pain-killing injections but never actually administered anything except, possibly, trace amounts.
A statement from the US Attorney's Office says "...the doctors billed health care benefit programs over $50 million and were paid approximately $12 million for these fraudulent services."
