Faculty at the University of North Texas says administrators are preemptively censoring course names and descriptions after race and equity references were removed.
Professor Katherine Mansfield said her spring master’s course on educational leadership was renamed from “Race, Class and Gender Issues in Education” to “Critical Inquiry in Education.” The course description was also revised, replacing language about “race, class, and gender inequalities” with references to leadership topics “for various student groups.”
The changes were part of more than 200 edits to College of Education courses, according to university documents. An email obtained by the Texas Tribune revealed administrators made the changes in response to Senate Bill 17, which eliminated diversity, equity, and inclusion offices at Texas universities.
Faculty members have expressed concern over the impact on academic freedom and curriculum integrity.
