UPS is hosting virtual hiring events over the next three days to hire 3,000 seasonal workers in North Texas. In September, the company announced plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers across its system to handle a spike in demand over the holidays.
"That number is increasing. Yes it is," says Human Resources Manager Ricky Joiner. "We're going to use these employees to help process our Christmas packages. As you know, Christmas is our busiest time of the year, so we're getting staff in order to handle that additional volume that comes in."
UPS is hosting "Brown Friday" virtual events Thursday through Saturday. Thirty events are scheduled across Texas. A complete list of events and locations is available here. Details about "Brown Friday" are available at the UPS website.
Jobs include package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers.
"If you have a truck or SUV, you would make deliveries from your personal vehicle," Joiner says. "That job pays $22 an hour, and we also pay mileage for that, as well."
According to UPS, about a third of its workforce in the United States started as seasonal employees. Joiner says people who start as seasonal workers often move to full-time. He says UPS entices workers by offering bonuses to current employees who refer someone else, and the company's "Earn and Learn" program can provide up to $1,300 for college expenses for seasonal employees.
"You shouldn't just think of this as a seasonal job. You should think of this as a career," Joiner says. "I started seasonally 35 years ago. Today, I'm an HR manager here at UPS."
UPS says it has provided $670 million in tuition for 300,000 people since starting the program in 1997.
