Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas have developed a "hand-held rapid saliva test" that can measure levels of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
Police could use the device during traffic stops, similar to hand-held breathalyzers to measure alcohol levels. Marijuana users could also use it to monitor their own levels.
The gadget, called CannibiSenS, took about four years to develop.
The results are 94% accurate, researchers said, adding further testing is necessary.
"We are actively looking for partners to build out the next phases of the technology," UT Dallas' head of bioengineering Dr. Shalini Prasad said.
The test can distinguish between THC and CBD, which is sold legally and does not cause psychoactive effects, she said.
