The City of Dallas is looking for 100 volunteers to help map hot spots in the city.

Afternoon high temperatures, like the ones we have seen across North Texas in recent weeks, can feel even hotter in places without trees. Concrete works to trap heat in, creating what's known as "heat islands."

Dallas Environmental Quality Director Carlos Evans told NBC 5 that he knows this can be deadly. “Extreme heat kills more people in the U.S. than any other weather event. Part of the goal is to realize a more resilient and sustainable city."

The goal Evans mentioned is to map out these "heat islands," with the help of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They're looking for 100 volunteers to mount a monitoring device on their cars and drive as normal. Then data from the device will be sent to a third party, who will create the map to be used by city planners.

Dallas is one of 16 cities across the country taking part in the ground level heat mapping project.
