Texas voters will decide next month if some childcare centers should get a break on their property taxes. It's Proposition 2 on the November ballot and would allow lawmakers to approve a property tax exemption on all or part of a property used as a daycare.
The vote would impact about 2,700 daycare centers across the state that are part of Texas Rising Star, the state’s quality rating and improvement system for early childhood programs.
Centers must also have at least 20% of their enrolled children subsidized through the Texas Workforce Commission. Both property owners and renters would be eligible for the exemption. Providers could decide what to do with the savings.
Supporters want to see the savings reinvested in teachers in the form of raises, help for parents struggling to pay tuition, and improvements and upgrades to daycare facilities. State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) sponsored the amendment and said it was a good first step to deal with the childcare shortage in Texas.
