Walmart will dramatically increase its fleet of aerial delivery drones in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The company made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
They have been offering limited drone delivery from several Walmart stores in North Texas. The expansion means 75% of households in DFW will be eligible for the service.
"We're bringing the convenience and immediacy of drone delivery to the majority of homes in one of the largest metros: Dallas-Fort Worth," said "Drone delivery isn't a thing of the future - it's here today."
The expansion will mark the first time that a retailer in the United States has offered drone delivery to that many households in a single market.
The drones will have a delivery radius of up to ten miles. Deliveries can be completed in between 10 and 30 minutes. Walmart officials say 75% of the items normally carried at a Walmart Supercenter meet the size and weight requirements to qualify for delivery by drone.
Walmart is working with two drone delivery providers, Wing and Zipline. Both companies have federal permission to fly their drones without a dedicated observer being able to see the drone at all times, which is referred to as "Beyond Visual Line of Sight" (BVLOS).
