Want your mail-in vote to count? Don't black out the bar code

The Tarrant County elections office has an important message for mail-in voters.

Tarrant County Elections Administrator Heider Garcia took to Twitter late last week with an important message for voters who are mailing their ballots in.

Apparently, some people are blacking out the barcode after seeing rumors on the internet that that barcode is somehow used to gather personal information about the voter.

Among other things, that barcode is actually there to ensure that a voter does not cast more than one ballot in a single election.

Garcia says if the barcode can't be made out, that envelope will never be opened, and the ballot will not be counted.
