Those who grew up playing with and watching Cooper Flagg say they are not at all surprised at how successful he has been so far in his basketball career.

The Dallas Mavericks expected first round pick Wednesday night only played his freshman year in his hometown in Maine before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida.

NBC5's Pat Doney joined the Mid-morning Mike Check on KRLD to talk about his recent trip to Newport, Maine to talk with those who played with Flagg.

"Won the state player of the year award as a freshman, a 14-year-old," Doney said. "He only played his freshman year there in the state. That's how big of a deal it was that one year."

Doney says those he talked to described how Flagg would break rims playing in the drive way and started dunking when he was only in middle school.
