For those still cleaning up following the weather this week...don't forget to look in your fridge. When in Doubt, Throw it Out! That's what the USDA wants you to do with all of the food in the fridge if you lost power.
Most foods will keep for up to 4 hours during a power outage. That's if you keep the door closed as much as possible.
Items you should toss include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers. Never taste-test food because it could make you sick. You can hang on to processed and hard cheeses, butter and margarine, as well as dried and uncut fresh fruit and uncut veggies. Milk, yogurt and baby formula need to be thrown out.
A full freezer can keep food safe for approximately 48 hours while just 24 hours if it is half full and the door remains closed. Food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F.
For a complete list on what gets to be thrown out and what can be kept, you can visit the USDA website HERE.
