While KRLD 1080 reporter Austin York was traveling on Southbound 75 heading into Richardson, Texas, Saturday morning, he snapped a photo of a rather rare scene – ice-covered streets.

Dallas-Fort Worth residents deal with higher temperatures than most of the country for much of the year, but they still aren’t able to escape effects from the massive storm moving across the U.S. this weekend. A look at the National Weather Service Fort Worth X account on Saturday showed photos of icy tree branches in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and snow plows working at DFW Airport.

“Winter weather conditions are affecting a large part of Texas as we start the weekend. Please stay off the roads if you can. If you must drive, check http://drivetexas.org before you go,” said an X post from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Fluffy piles of snow aren’t necessarily forecasted in the Dallas region, with the NWS predicting “a mix of freezing rain and sleet will affect most of the area, including isolated occurrences heavy thundersleet at times.” However, some snow is expected across parts of North Texas by Sunday morning before the wintry weather exits the scene.

“While snow is forming aloft, it melts as it falls into above-freezing air (a ‘warm nose’) before refreezing into ice pellets (sleet) in the cold Arctic air near the ground,” the NWS explained in an X post.

Regardless of whether sleet or snow is falling, life-threatening cold is expected in the area into Monday. Temperatures mostly in the single-digits are expected over the next couple of nights and wind chills as could dip as low as -12 degrees.
