A woman was fatally shot by Lewisville police early Thursday after a chase that spanned multiple North Texas cities and ended in a commercial parking lot, police say.
The incident began shortly after midnight when a Lewisville police officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by a woman believed to have a felony warrant issued by another agency. After the officer confirmed her identity and awaited verification of the warrant, the woman fled the scene at a high rate of speed, Lewisville police said.
The pursuit stretched across several jurisdictions before returning to Lewisville. During the chase, the suspect collided with a Lewisville patrol vehicle but continued to flee. The officer involved in the crash was not injured.
The pursuit came to an end in the 2200 block of the southbound Interstate 35E service road, where officers attempted to arrest the woman.
According to police, the suspect produced a handgun and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Officers fired, striking the woman. Officers rendered aid at the scene and called for emergency medical assistance. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m.
No officers were injured in the incident. The identity of the suspect has not been released pending family notification.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
