The parents of a student at the University of Texas at Austin are suing a UT-Austin fraternity after their son killed himself.

The wrongful death lawsuit against the Alpha Nu chapter of Sigma Chi accuses the fraternity of subjecting 18-year-old Sawyer Updike to brutal hazing.

Attorney Ted Lyon says they wanted to call a news conference to go along with the lawsuit because this case cries out for attention.

"It cries out for prevention, it cries out for university officials to be ever diligent," Lyon said. "And fraternities to be ever diligent about not letting this kind of thing happen."

Two individuals from North Texas are also named in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit says Updike was forced to drink dangerous amounts of alcohol, endure physical whippings, and a staple gun was used on his hip.

Lyon also says before Updike went to the fraternity, he did not use drugs.

"They addicted him, and then they gave him the psychedelic mushrooms and cocaine at the time that he committed suicide," Lyon said.

KRLD has reached out to both UT-Austin and the fraternity for their response.
