
A bird fouled up travel plans for more than 100 Spirit Airlines passengers this weekend.
Their flight had hardly began Saturday night when the passengers departing from Atlantic City, N.J., had to evacuate. Spirit suspects a the large bird flew into one of its engines during takeoff, causing the disruption.
“The captain braked safely and brought the plane to a stop, received an indication of damage to the engine, and ordered an evacuation in accordance with our standard procedures,” said a statement from Spirit shared by ABC 6.
A video posted by The Lakewood Scoop shows passengers going down an inflatable slide to get off the aircraft. Foam was being sprayed on the plane to stop the fire.
According to the statement from Spirit, all guests and team members evacuated the craft and were bussed back to the terminal. The flight was was headed to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Atlantic City International Airport.
“We commend our crew for handling the situation swiftly and safely,” said the company. Spirit also said gave passengers full refunds, future travel vouchers and the option of travelling to Fort Lauderdale on another plane Saturday.
ABC 6 reported that 102 passengers were on the flight and that two suffered minor injuries.
