With days getting shorter and more people out after dark, The Texas Department of Transportation has opened a statewide pedestrian safety campaign.

Last year in October, there were 89 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes statewide. That was nearly 12 % of the total pedestrians killed in Texas in 2024.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, TXDOT reports 555 traffic crashes involving pedestrians in 2024.  Of those, 72 were fatalities.

"We're really taking the opportunity to educate both drivers and pedestrians about different safety measures they can take so everyone gets home safely. In October, our days start getting shorter and this is a time that people are still out when it's dark," said Madison Shein with the Texas Department of Transportation. "You know, we have so many different fall activities that are really having an impact with people out and about. So we're really highlighting safety measures including using a crosswalk. We're also highlighting that, you might want to wear some reflective clothing so our drivers can see you as they're trying to get to their destinations."
