Forget renovating. Build a new one! That's what an engineering firm is telling Dallas leaders about the city's convention center.

The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown is old, too small, and needs lots of work - and the engineering and design firm the city hired to oversee a massive renovation is now saying the smart move is to build a brand new one.

WSP USA Inc is telling the Dallas City Council a new convention center would be more competetive and would help lure more lucrative events to Dallas, and would encourage new development downtown.

Originally the firm told the city it would cost nearly $3 Billion to build a new convention center, but it's now saying the project would cost taxpayers just under $2 billion. No explanation was given why the costs were revised down.

City leaders are looking at several options to pay for the project. The Dallas City council will consider the recommendation in January 2022.
