San Antonio — Eleven students at Robert L. Vale Middle School became ill Wednesday after drinking expired milk served in the cafeteria, Northside Independent School District officials said.

The students reported feeling unwell or showed signs of illness after consuming the milk during lunch on April 1. All 11 were evaluated by the campus nurse. District officials confirmed that only a portion of the milk supply at the Far West Side school was past its expiration date — not the entire inventory — and the incident appears isolated to Vale Middle School. No other Northside ISD campuses reported similar issues, and no additional cases have been recorded this week.

Vale Middle School and NISD Child Nutrition staff are investigating how the expired milk reached students. The district’s milk supplier is Oak Farms Dairy. Following standard protocol for a suspected food-related illness, the incident was reported to the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, which is reviewing food handling procedures at the campus.

Officials said the affected students were checked by the school nurse. No serious injuries, hospitalizations or other complications have been reported in connection with the event.

The situation has drawn attention from parents concerned about cafeteria safety in the large school district, though NISD has emphasized that the matter was limited and is being addressed promptly.
