Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is set to discuss a new strategy on Thursday in Eagle Pass aimed at deterring migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Abbott is expected to highlight a 14% decline in border crossings over the past fiscal year, compared to a record high in 2023. The governor may also use the event to lay the groundwork for a potential funding request to extend Operation Lone Star, the state’s border security initiative launched in 2021.

The Texas Legislature is set to convene in a few weeks, and reports suggest Abbott could seek enough funding to keep the operation running through 2027. Abbott will be joined by current border czar Mike Banks and other officials at the event, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
