Gov. Greg Abbott has requested federal assistance for counties in southeast Texas impacted by severe weather last month.

The request, made to the U.S. Small Business Administration, seeks a disaster declaration for Montgomery and Brazoria counties, which were struck by multiple tornadoes on Dec 28 and 29. The declaration would make federal disaster loans available to affected communities in those counties, as well as surrounding areas.

Abbott's office says the state’s damage assessment indicates the affected regions meet the criteria for federal aid.
