A 19-year-old Babson College student was deported to Honduras after being detained at Boston’s Logan Airport while trying to fly home to Austin for Thanksgiving, despite a federal judge issuing an emergency order blocking her removal.
The student, identified in court records as Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, was taken into custody by immigration officials before boarding her flight and placed on a plane out of the country shortly afterward.
According to filings in federal court, attorneys sought an immediate stay of removal after learning she was being processed for deportation. A judge granted the order, but records indicate the ruling was issued after the student had already been flown out of the United States. Immigration authorities have not publicly explained the timing of the removal or why the court order did not prevent it.
Lopez Belloza had been living in the U.S. while attending the Massachusetts college and was attempting to return to her family in Texas for the holiday. The case has drawn scrutiny over how the removal unfolded and what recourse, if any, her legal team may have to challenge the deportation now that she is no longer in the country.
