Camp Mystic has hired high-profile Texas attorney Mikal Watts to defend against lawsuits stemming from the July 4 flood that killed 28 campers and staff members in the Texas Hill Country.

Watts confirmed he is representing the camp pro bono, saying he does not believe it is legally responsible for the tragedy and intends to make that case in court.

The lawsuits were filed after sudden flooding along the Guadalupe River swept through the camp near Hunt, destroying cabins and vehicles and forcing dozens to flee to higher ground. State and federal investigators have been reviewing the disaster response and the sequence of events leading up to the flood.

Camp Mystic, a century-old private girls’ camp, has remained closed since the flooding. Attorneys for victims’ families are pursuing civil claims alleging negligence in emergency preparedness, while Watts says the camp’s leadership followed all safety protocols in place at the time.
