The US Justice Department is demanding that Texas Governor Greg Abbott remove razor wire and floating barriers along the Rio Grande River. And they are threatening to get a court order if they have to to make him remove them.
Thursday afternoon, the DOJ sent Governor Abbott a letter making the demand, just as Democrats in Congress sent a letter to federal officials asking for them to step in over allegations of migrants being mistreated.
Members of Congress say they're sounding a "profound alarm" over reports of several injuries of migrants in recent weeks including one report of a pregnant woman who became entangled in concertina wire (razor wire).
Governor Abbott responded to the government's demands in a series of tweets. The Governor announced that the state of Texas is protected by the US Constitution, and that we have every right to defend our border with Mexico.
In the post, Governor Abbott blamed the humanitarian crisis along the border on President Biden and his policies, and says they encourage migrants to "risk their lives" crossing illegally.
The Governor then ended the post saying, "We will see you in court, Mr. President."
