Gov. Abbott in Del Rio, getting first-hand look at border

Texas Governor Greg Abbott was in Del Rio Tuesday, calling the situation there "chaotic".

He says the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard have sealed the border by placing DPS and Texas National Guard vehicles along the border to create a makeshift barrier that extends for miles.

Approximately 16,000 people, mostly Haitian refugees, had crossed into the United States from Mexico by walking over a dam in the Rio Grande River in the last week.

Abbott says those who trespass onto private property or public land, were being arrested and jailed.

He also slammed the Biden administration, claiming their open-door policy lead to this situation.

"Because the Biden Administration is doing nothing to secure our border because the Biden Administration has been promoting and allowing open border policies, it has been the state of Texas that had to step up and address this challenge and work with the local mayor, the local county judge, and the local sheriff," Abbott said.

U.S. officials say more than 6,000 Haitians and other migrants have been removed from an encampment around a bridge in Del Rio. Gov. Abbott says about 8,600 migrants remain at the camp.
