The Texas House has advanced a bill that would restrict transgender people from using bathrooms in public schools and government buildings that match their gender identity.
Under the proposal, individuals would be required to use multi-user restrooms and changing facilities based on the sex listed on their original birth certificate.
Supporters argue the measure provides consistency and protects privacy, while opponents say it targets transgender Texans and could violate their civil rights.
The bill now heads to the Senate for further debate.
If passed and signed into law, it would take effect statewide, impacting schools, state offices, prisons, and other government-operated facilities.
