A Houston-area midwife is facing felony charges for allegedly performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license, marking one of the first criminal enforcement actions under Texas’ near-total abortion ban.

State investigators say 57-year-old Maria Margarita Rojas was arrested after an undercover operation revealed she had been performing abortion procedures and prescribing medication without medical credentials. Authorities allege she operated multiple clinics in northwest Houston and Waller County.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office says the case stems from an ongoing investigation into unlicensed medical practices tied to abortion services. Rojas is charged with two counts of practicing medicine without a license and two counts of performing an abortion, both felony offenses under state law.

Texas law currently bans nearly all abortions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, allowing procedures only in limited cases to save the mother’s life. The case against Rojas is being prosecuted in Harris County.
