The Houston Police Officers’ Union is openly inviting New York City police officers to join the Houston Police Department following the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City.
In a social media post this week, the union encouraged NYPD officers to consider relocating to Texas, highlighting Houston’s higher pay, lower cost of living, and what it described as stronger support from city leadership. The post came just days after Mamdani, a progressive state lawmaker from Queens, won New York’s mayoral race on a platform that included police reform and budget changes.
Union officials say the Houston Police Department currently has about 1,200 officer vacancies. Recruitment efforts from Texas departments have increasingly targeted officers from other states, especially those facing morale or funding challenges.
The Houston Police Department has not issued an official statement on the outreach, but the union’s message quickly drew national attention amid ongoing debates over policing priorities in major U.S. cities.
