A new Texas law aimed at preventing censorship of political views on social media platforms has been blocked by a federal judge in west Texas.

The law signed by Governor Greg Abbott in September was written to prohibit the big social media companies like Twitter and Facebook from blocking content based on political viewpoints, and it allows Texans to sue companies to reinstate their accounts.

The law was due to take effect today. But yesterday, federal Judge Robert Pitman for the Western District of Texas ruled that social media companies have a First Amendment right to moderate content on their platforms.

To that end, he granted the preliminary injunction requested by the social media companies.
