Jury selection in the death penalty trial of Patrick Crusius, the man convicted of killing 23 people in a 2019 mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart, has entered a new phase.

After narrowing down a pool of hundreds of prospective jurors, attorneys for Crusius and the state are now conducting individual questioning. Crusius, who has already been convicted on federal charges for the murders, is serving 90 consecutive life sentences. However, state prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Crusius drove from Allen to El Paso in August 2019, where he opened fire on a crowd at a Walmart, specifically targeting Hispanic victims.

The trial is expected to begin later this year.
