LAVON, TX — A two-day manhunt for a middle school student linked to a fatal shooting in Collin County has come to an end.
Lavon Police Chief J. Michael Jones confirmed that the 14-year-old suspect, who had been hiding out in Dallas for 48 hours, surrendered to authorities late yesterday. According to officials, an individual who was with the boy ultimately convinced him to turn himself in.
The Incident
The teenager is accused of shooting and killing a 24-year-old man during a party held in Lavon over the weekend. While the motive for the violence remains unknown, the incident has shaken the local community.
Due to the suspect's status as a minor, his identity is not being released. Following his surrender, he was transported to the Collin County Youth Detention Center.
Next Steps in the Investigation
Chief Jones stated that the investigation is far from over. Detectives are scheduled to interview the suspect today to determine what led to the gunfire.
Furthermore, police are looking into the 48 hours the teen spent on the run. Chief Jones emphasized that investigators will be looking to identify and potentially charge anyone who may have assisted the suspect in escaping or hiding from law enforcement.
