
The wildfires that tore through tht Texas Panhandle earlier this year caused $123 million in agricultural losses, according to Texas A&M AgriLife.
Three people and more than 12,000 cattle died when the Smokehouse Creek Fire, the state's largest-ever wildfire, the Windy Deuce Fire and other blazes swept through the area in late February. The fires weren't fully contained until mid-March.
Texas A&M AgriLife Economist Blair Fannin says ranchers took a hit of about $69 million in infrastructure losses, like fences, barns, corrals and hay stocks.
They also lost $26 million in long-term grazing losses, $27 million in cattle losses, and around $1 million in other expenses, including disposing of deceased animals and not being able to take advantage of higher market prices.
