The race for Texas attorney general is tightening in both parties as early voting approaches in the state’s primary elections, according to a new poll.

In the Democratic primary, state Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas) holds a narrow lead over former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski, 25% to 22%, in a survey conducted by political scientist Mark Jones. The poll shows a large share of voters still undecided, suggesting the contest remains fluid in the final days before ballots are cast.

On the Republican side, the survey indicates the contest is likely headed to a runoff because no candidate is approaching a majority. U.S. Rep. Chip Roy leads with 33% support among likely Republican primary voters, followed by state Sen. Mayes Middleton with 23% and state Sen. Joan Huffman with 13%.

Under Texas election rules, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the primary, the top two finishers advance to a runoff election.

The attorney general’s race is one of the most closely watched statewide contests on the primary ballot this year.
