A proposed bill aims to expand Texas' sex offender registry in the wake of the murder of an 11-year-old girl in Livingston last February.
The proposed legislation, named “Audrii’s Law” after Audrii Cunningham, is sponsored by Rep. Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin). It seeks to close legal loopholes that allowed offenders like Don McDougal to avoid being listed on the registry.
McDougal, who pleaded guilty to enticing a child in a prior case, was not required to register as a sex offender. If his conviction had been for indecency with a child, his name would have appeared on the registry.
Andy Kahan of Houston’s Crimestoppers said the law could have made a difference.
McDougal, who was a friend of Audrii’s father and lived in a trailer on their property, is accused of murdering the child.
