A rare, locally transmitted case of malaria has been confirmed in Cameron County, the southernmost county in Texas on the Mexico border.
Reports say the patient was apparently bitten by a mosquito while working outdoors near the coast. The Texas Department of State Health Services confirms the patient had not traveled outside of the country or state.
This is the first locally transmitted case reported in Texas in nearly 30 years. Other cases over the years have been patients who travelled to parts of the world where Malaria is more common.
The Centers for Disease Control has issued a Health Alert because four other cases have been found in Florida, also locally transmitted.
