School choice, a proposal to use taxpayer dollars to pay for private education, is close to becoming law in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) says.

Abbott was joined Tuesday by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R), House Speaker Dustin Burrows, and former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey at an event highlighting the initiative. Arizona was the first state in the nation to implement universal school choice.

Abbott emphasized that expanding school choice is key to making Texas the top-ranked state for education, surpassing Florida, which currently holds the top spot.

Patrick echoed Abbott’s sentiments, stating that Texas is fully funding public education while also providing families with meaningful school choice opportunities.

The push for school choice has been a key focus for Abbott, though it has faced resistance in the Texas House, particularly from rural lawmakers concerned about its impact on public schools.
