As the Texas Longhorns gear up for a showdown against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, some fans have a pointed message for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): stay home.
On the social media platform X, Cruz revealed he had made a friendly wager with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, an Ohio native and Buckeyes supporter. The terms? The loser must deliver food and beer from their home state to the winner while wearing the victorious team’s jersey. Cruz is backing the Longhorns, while Vance is rooting for Ohio State.
However, some Longhorn fans are less enthusiastic about Cruz's involvement. Online, they’ve pleaded with the senator not to attend the game, citing the so-called "Cruz Curse," a tongue-in-cheek belief among some Texas sports fans that teams falter when Cruz shows up.
The "curse" gained traction in the 2023 baseball playoffs when Cruz, a Houston Astros fan, attended their playoff games - only to see the team eliminated by the Texas Rangers.
Even fans of rival Texas A&M have chimed in, encouraging Cruz to attend in hopes the alleged curse will strike the Longhorns.
The Cotton Bowl will be played Friday night at AT&T Stadium.
