As an Arctic blast grips Texas, state leaders are warning residents about hazardous road conditions and urging caution while traveling.
The Texas Department of Transportation spent this week treating roads and bridges with de-icing materials in preparation for the freezing temperatures. Chief Nim Kidd, head of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, cautioned that these measures have limitations.
Kidd expressed particular concern about stranded drivers, noting that being stuck in a vehicle during freezing weather can be life-threatening, especially in remote areas of the state.
In urban areas, Kidd warned of another potential danger: car accidents that knock out power poles, which could lead to widespread outages and unsafe conditions.
