A proposal to create the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office within the governor’s office is one step closer to becoming law after winning approval in the Texas House.

Senate Bill 14, sponsored in the House by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R-Southlake), would establish a new state office modeled after the federal Department of Government Efficiency created under President Donald Trump.

Under the legislation, Gov. Greg Abbott would appoint members to a Regulatory Efficiency Panel to provide guidance and recommendations — a provision that drew questions from Rep. Ana-Maria Rodriguez Ramos (D-Richardson) during debate.

With the House’s approval, the bill now awaits one final vote before heading to the governor’s desk.
