Republican voters in Texas are more likely to vote for former President Donald Trump after he was convicted on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records than they were before the verdict, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by the University of Texas and Texas Politics Project immediately after the conviction, shows Trump leading President Joe Biden by seven points in Texas overall.

Republicans and Democrats reacted predictably to Trump's conviction, but independents were a different story.

"Twenty-seven percent of independents said that the guilty verdict made them more likely to vote for him and 28% said that it made them less likely with everyone else either saying it had no impact or they didn't know," Texas Politics Project Director Jim Henson said.

Of those independent voters, 44% said they believed Trump received a fair trial and 34% said he did not. Henson said 75% of Republicans did not think the former president received a fair trial.

The poll also found U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R) leading Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas) by 11 points, and that voters' top three issues this year are immigration and border security, the economy, and inflation.
