Texas retailers are losing $5.9 billion a year due to theft

Retail theft is on the rise in Texas. These organized crime rings are costing the state big bucks.

Comal County District Attorney Jennifer Tharp says that Texas retailers are losing $5.9 billion a year due to theft. "And what it means for the state of Texas is we lost out on $372 million on sales tax," she said.

She told a state legislative committee that the laws are too lax. There is a push to upgrade the charges for repeat offenders.

Texas is not alone. California's liberal legislature is also looking to make the same change
