Following a lot of criticism the Texas Railroad Commission has voted to make it tougher for natural gas producers to opt out of prepping their wells for the winter. But reports say it still may not be enough to prevent power outages.

To avoid weatherizing their wells a gas producer could request to 'opt out' by paying a $150 fee. But after being excoriated over the rule in a report, the commission changed that rule.

But Chairman Wayne Christian defended the commission and says some have been on a witch hunt, and looking for someone to blame.

However, the approval of the new rules does little to weatherize Texas’ natural gas infrastructure. New laws to address the failures of the state’s power grid do not require natural gas wells to be prepared for winter weather until March 2023.
