Texas Senate committee advances bill to ban hemp products that contain THC

A bill that could put nearly 10,000 licensed hemp product retailers in Texas out of business is moving forward at the State Capitol.

Senate Bill 3, authored by State Sen. Charles Perry, has cleared committee and is now headed to the full Senate for a vote. The legislation seeks to ban the sale of all consumable hemp products containing THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.

Advocates for hemp businesses are pushing back against the proposed ban. Heather Fazio, director of the Texas Cannabis Policy Center, said store owners are calling for regulation rather than total prohibition.

"We want to see safety standards put in place to protect consumers, but banning these products outright would devastate small businesses and the communities they serve," Fazio said.

If passed, the bill could have sweeping implications for Texas' burgeoning hemp industry, which has grown rapidly since the legalization of hemp production and the sale of low-THC products in 2019.
