A bill to ban THC will be introduced in the Texas Senate when the legislature convenes in January, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) says.
State Sen. Charles Perry (R-Lubbock) plans to introduce Senate Bill 3, Patrick said. The bill would outlaw the sale of any products containing THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana. Patrick argued that such products are unsafe and claimed the bill would have bipartisan support in the Senate.
Patrick criticized retailers for exploiting an agricultural law intended to regulate hemp, allowing them to sell Delta-9 THC products. He claimed some of these products are stronger than regular marijuana and are being marketed to children.
Patrick predicted swift passage of the bill through the Senate and said he hoped the House would support it too.
Advocates for cannabis reform are expected to oppose the measure, pointing to the economic and medicinal benefits of THC-based products.
