A Texas woman who was born a quadruplet herself has now made history at an El Paso hospital by giving birth to quintuplets.
Theresa Troia, a 36-year-old nurse consultant and single mother, delivered five premature babies by cesarean section on June 3 at just 28 weeks of pregnancy. The newborns include three daughters - Isabella, Viviana, and a third sister whose name has not yet been released - and two baby boys.
The delivery, which took place at Las Palmas Medical Center, marked the first time quintuplets have ever been born within the Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare system. Each baby weighed just under three pounds, and while all required specialized neonatal care, doctors say the infants are progressing well. Three have already been cleared to go home, while two remain in the neonatal intensive care unit for ongoing treatment.
For Troia, the journey carries deep personal meaning. She refers to her children as her “rainbow babies,” born after the loss of her first child. Drawing on her own childhood growing up alongside three siblings as a quadruplet, she says she feels prepared to take on the challenges of raising five infants at once.
Hospital officials praised the outcome as both rare and remarkable. Multiple births at this scale are considered extremely high-risk, requiring precise coordination among obstetricians, neonatologists, and critical care teams.
Troia says she is grateful for the support of family, friends, and her medical team, and is focused on the day when all five of her babies are able to join her at home.
