The Texas Supreme Court is weighing whether text messages about state business sent by Gov. Greg Abbott should be considered public record.
A government watchdog group is seeking access to texts from both Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the Uvalde school shooting.
The Attorney General’s office is opposing the request, arguing the group has no legal standing to bring the matter to the Supreme Court. However, attorney Catherine Robb contends that under current law, the group could potentially ask the Attorney General’s office to sue itself.
The Attorney General’s office has also argued that both the governor and attorney general are exempt from the state’s Public Information Act and has urged the court to dismiss the case.
The Texas Supreme Court has not yet indicated when it will issue a ruling.
